Colored Concrete Options and What to Know

Colored concrete has become a popular choice for many homeowners and businesses looking to enhance their outdoor spaces or create unique indoor designs. By adding color to concrete, you can transform ordinary surfaces into vibrant, eye-catching features. Before embarking on a colored concrete project, it’s important to understand the pros and cons associated with this versatile material.

Color Options

One of the greatest advantages of colored concrete is the wide array of color options available. From earthy tones to bold hues, there is a color palette to suit every style and preference. Concrete can be colored using integral pigments, which are mixed directly into the concrete during the batching process, or with surface-applied stains and dyes. This versatility allows for endless possibilities when it comes to creating beautiful, customized designs. It is important to note that we can pour a similar color when adding to, or extending existing concrete. We cannot, however, perfectly match new colored concrete to existing color concrete due to usage, weather, and age.

Color Variations

Additionally, concrete can appear to be different colors under different conditions. We do our best to consider the concrete finish and how it might affect color, but this is one of the hardest things to explain/display. Below are some items to consider when choosing finishes:

  • Top cast finish will lighten the color

  • A heavier percent or poundage of color would need to be chosen in the same color family for the top cast finish to come out a similar color as selected.

  • Certain types of sealers and polishes will make the concrete look constantly wet and darker than its dried out color.

  • A salt or broom finish are often the best choices for color concrete that wants to stay the color of the color chips etc

Durability

Durability is a key consideration when choosing any type of concrete, and colored concrete is no exception. Fortunately, colored concrete retains the same strength and durability as traditional gray concrete. When properly installed and maintained, it can withstand heavy foot traffic, vehicular traffic, and the environmental elements. It’s important to note, however, that some surface-applied stains and dyes may require additional protective coatings to maintain their color and protect against wear and fading.

Maintenance and Protection

Maintaining the color and appearance of colored concrete requires regular care and attention. While colored concrete is generally low-maintenance, it is important to protect it from staining and damage. Applying a high-quality sealer can help to prevent stains and enhance the longevity of the color. Additionally, it’s crucial to avoid using harsh cleaning agents or abrasive tools that could damage the surface. By following proper maintenance practices and seeking professional guidance, you can ensure that your colored concrete remains vibrant and beautiful for years to come.
