La Casita De Ellwood: A Serene Family Home
Tucked away on one of the most cherished blocks in Goleta, is La Casita De Ellwood. Sitting on the border of the Butterfly Preserve and located a four-minute walk away from the ocean, this house is a serene family home. Large eucalyptus trees surround the property, and the neighborhood’s quiet environment is peaceful and calm.
When we began this project, our goal was to transform the home into the perfect haven for a family that loves outdoor activities and has two young boys. Even the smallest details were thought through to ensure the final product would complement their lifestyle.
Creating a warm welcome:
Warm colors and a welcoming landscape immediately invites you in. To create a natural and soft aesthetic, we used Belgard pavers for the driveway. This style highlights the cedar facade, adding character and charm to the front of the home. With hardened polymeric sand swept between the pavers, the joints remain fully intact and appear new, even several years after completing the driveway. Following the completion of the driveway, loose flagstone was laid for a pathway from the sidewalk to the paver walkway leading to the front door.
A Gathering Place:
More recently, we laid pavers into a pathway that leads around the corner of the house. In the backyard, top-cast finished concrete creates a spacious patio complete with a built-in barbecue. We designed the barbecue with the mission of bringing people together - a value the owners prioritize in their daily lives. The polished countertops double as space for cooking as well as an outdoor table for guests. The outlets, integrated into the sides of the structure, bring ease to the cooking process and allow the use of electric appliances outside. As a thoughtful design detail, we worked with a plumbing contractor to create a second pipeline that prevents the grill from stealing gas from the house. In the corner of the patio, we incorporated an outdoor shower with a hot water line. Perfect for rinsing off after the beach, the warm water is also used to fill pools for the boys to play in during the summer months.
The Focal Point:
A few feet from the patio lies the yard's focal point, a large deck that runs flush with the master bedroom. Opening their doors, our clients can immediately enjoy the sun or step straight into the hot tub at night. A sub-slab was placed underneath the deck to drain all of the water into the plants. This tactic ensures durability and strength by preventing any possibility of rotting. We loved using our A License to add this gorgeous element to the home.
