Creating an Urban Oasis

Minutes from Leadbetter Beach, a walk away from Shoreline Park, and near downtown - the Mesa is one of the most idyllic neighborhoods in Santa Barbara. We had the pleasure of working on La Plata, a gorgeous home located in this exceptional corner of the city.

Creating a Spacious Home:

The owners of La Plata wanted a spacious home environment, and although only on a small plot of land, we were determined to make this dream a reality. We were contracted by McToldridge Construction Inc. to use both our A & C licenses to work in the street, create the curbside, the entire home’s drainage system, and complete all of the project's concrete, from the structural foundation to the clean top-cast finishes and site concrete.

Blending Modern and organic:

The owners envisioned their home to be simultaneously contemporary and organic. Carefully considering this, we used various textures, creating a natural aesthetic that contrasted the modern structure of the building. Vibrant landscaping compliments the gray walls, and board-formed concrete encompasses the yard, adding textural depth to the exterior. Around the corner, a flagstone pathway leads to a tropical backyard complete with an outdoor shower.

Maximizing Limited Space:

We worked with the owners and general contractor to strategically maximize the limited space surrounding the building. While desiring a large house, they envisioned a spacious outdoor area, perfect for relaxing with family on a warm Santa Barbara afternoon. Utilizing the shape of the building, we poured a roomy patio tucked between the corners of the home. To add depth, we filled the gap lying between the wall and the patio with pebbles. The coordinating colors and mixture of textures beautifully tie this area together to create a welcoming environment.

From start to finish, this project took about six months to complete for our portion of the work, though the total project for McToldridge Construction Inc. took a little bit longer. Throughout the process, we were continually thankful to work alongside incredible clients and their general contractor. It was a true honor to transform their unique home into a serene urban oasis.
